KUALA LUMPUR – The Sungai Besar UMNO Division Chief, Datuk Seri Jamal Md. Yunos made a public apology to the former Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change, Yeo Bee Yin for slandering her over the Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (Yawas) foundation funds.

Jamal made the public apology before the presence of media practitioners at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex as a part of the demands of the civil suit by Bee Yin against him.

Remoursefully, Jamal confessed that Bee Yin is an honest and sincere leader in managing the senior citizen scheme, Skim Mesra Usia Emas.

“Based on the discussion by the lawyers from both sides and agreed by me and YB Yeoh Bee Yin before the judge today, thus, I, Jamal Md Yunos apologise for slandering Yeoh Bee Yin earlier.

“With this, I confess that Yeoh Bee Yin is honest in sincere in managing the senior citizen funds (YAWAS). I would like to apologise to her over my mistake. I am sorry.

“These are the words I say, to rectify the mistakes I made four years ago.

“This is politics. Although we have differences of opinion and political ideology, we can resolve this amicably,” he said before his lawyer, V. Mugunthan and Mohammed Nasser Yusof.

Meanwhile, Bee Yin was represented by lawyer, Datuk Sankara Nair.

Nevertheless, Bee Yin, who is also the Member of Parliament of Bakri from DAP was not present to listen to Jamal’s apology.

During the High Court open proceeding, Judge Rohana Ali Yusof recorded settlement between Jamal and Bee Yin, which was delivered by their respective lawyers.

On January this year, the court rejected Jamal’s application to postpone the defamation trial filed by Bee Yin against him and decided that the defendant needed to pay the cost of RM1,000.

On 14 June 2017, Bee Yin, as the plaintiff filed a civil suit demanding for RM5 million in compensation from Jamal following a defamatory statement of abusing the YAWAS funds.

According to the statement, Bee Yin claimed that Jamal has issued defamatory statement against her on 21 March 2017, and the statement was published by several newspapers, new portals and Jamal’s Facebook account.

Bee Yin claimed that Jamal’s statement, among others, have given an impression that she has abused the public funds for her personal benefits, depicting her as an unethical and untrustworthy person.

According to Bee Yin, the remarks had brought severe and irreparable damage to her character, credit and reputation both locally and internationally, involved her in public scandal and subjected her to hate and insults in the eyes of the community.

Besides the RM5 million general damage, Bee Yin also demanded a compensatory, aggravated and exemplary damages and a court injunction to prohibit Jamal from repeating his allegations. –MalaysiaGazette
