KUALA LUMPUR – The date for the long-awaited debate between former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Opposition Chief, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be announced in a news conference end of this week.
The location and media allowed to broadcast the debate between the two leaders will also be announced, said the Member of Parliament (MP) of Lembah Pantai, Fahmi Fadzil.
According to him, a discussion was made with the Selangor Barisan Nasional Communications Chief, Isham Jalil, who is also Najib’s special officer.
Fahmi said, Anwar wanted the debate to take place as soon as possible, during the Ramadan, meanwhile, Isham said that the debate is only suitable to be held after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
“Yesterday, 13 April, 4.00 pm, I repeated Anwar’s stand to hold the debate as soon as possible in Ramadan.
“And, Isham stood firm and said that it would be more appropriate to do it after Raya. We discussed several specific dates but it was not finalised.
“We also agreed that the announcement on the debate will be made together in a joint-media conference end of this week,” Fahmi said in a brief statement.
He said, no specific date has been agreed by both parties at the moment.
“Isham Jalil and Najib Razak allegedly said that Anwar agreed with a date after Raya. No such thing. We haven’t agreed on anything. Everything is still under discussion and not finalised.
“8 April 2022, during the first meeting with Isham, I delivered Anwar’s wish to debate about Sapura Energy in Ramadan.
“Isham said that Ramadan is not suitable and gave various reasons and suggested to do it after Raya.
“I accept his opinion and we discussed about several dates to be referred to our leaders,” he said.
They also discussed about time, moderator, number of audience, security and many other things.
“So, we’ll wait for the joint-official announcement this week. Wanna rock? Let’s rock!” said Fahmi. -MalaysiaGazette
