SEGAMAT – Not one or two but 121 out of 140 cattle reared by a farmer had perished in the flood.
The tragedy has caused Mohamad Faizal Musa, 42, to be devastated and lost hope to continue his farming business.
Furthermore, he had to witness each of the animal died before his eyes and he had to suffer the loss of more than RM600,000.
Sharing his experience, Faizal said that the water level rose too fast. He, along with his employees could not save the cattle on time.
“I am very disappointed. If the government helps me, I will continue. Otherwise, we’ll see. Let’s look at what sort of assistance the government can give me. I can’t say anything. I am disappointed.
“We tried to save them right from the start but we could not. We could only evacuate one or two at a time because these cattle are huge. We’re lucky to have our own boat but it is not enough.
“The flood earlier was not that bad. I have increased the height of my farm. I thought that it would not hit me. I don’t think that I want to do this anymore. I am disappointed. We’ll see how the government can help,” he said when met at Kampung Batu Tujuh, Jalan Jementah recently.
Meanwhile, his friend, Teng Swee, 60, also sustained injury after he broke his left arm while trying to save the cattle during the flood where he fell and hit the boat’s engine.
“We could not do anything else. We just wanted to save the cattle but they are huge in size. It was not easy. I fell and hit the boat’s engine,” he said.
The flood victims in Johor had increased to 4,496 individuals from 1,242 families. They have been relocated to temporary flood evacuation centres (PPS).
Segamat district recorded the highest number of flood victims. However, it has reduced to 2,479 individuals from 678 families. -MalaysiaGazette
