SEGAMAT – The public should not turn the flood disaster into water fest and risk their safety and endanger their lives.

The Johor Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department Chief, Rasidi Md Yunos said, some individuals think that the flood is fun and they carry out activities such as fishing and even allow their children to play in flood waters.

“They see the flood as a fest where the people had no guilt about making Tik Tok videos without life jacket.

“They could race in small boats as though it was a fest. This is an inappropriate attitude for their own safety. I hope that they would obey the instructions given by the authority. Obey the SOP.

“Once again, I wish to advice everyone to follow the instructions given by the authorities. We, the rescuers care about the lives of the people. That is why we closed the routes that are unsafe for the people. We have made traffic diversion. My advice is, obey the order given by the authorities,” he said.

The continuous four days of heavy rain in Segamat has caused the district to be badly affected by flood.

901 families with 3,989 flood victims have been shifted to the 52 temporary flood evacuation centres (PPS) in the district.

An observation at Kampung Alai found some teenagers doing net fishing on boat without life jacket. Some children were also playing in the flood waters without being monitored by adults.

Although they acknowledged that that the activities were dangerous, the teenagers said that they were merely filling fishing to pass time.

Wan Abdul Hazeeq, 20, confessed that his mother often advises him to be careful.

“We are used to the flood each time it rains. It has been a while since it flooded. This time, it’s slightly worse.

“It is dangerous but we don’t allow small children to do it,” he said when met at Kampung Alai.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Firdaus Jamiran, 21, confessed that his activities had neglected the safety aspects.

“We usually fish during flood because the water has risen up there.

“Yes, safety is very important, do not neglect all those aspects,” he said, sharing that they could get catfish and barb fish from the activity. -MalaysiaGazette
