PARIS – Czech skier, Tereza Nova, who suffered a heavy fall during World Cup downhill training at Garmisch-Partenkirchen last month, has been awakened from artificial sleep and will be transported home to the Czech Republic, doctors in Germany said Thursday.
Due to the nature of the injuries, doctors had to put her into an induced coma.
After two weeks, doctors in the intensive care unit began to gradually awaken the skier by reducing her medication.
“After the brain swelling subsided and the bleeding visibly subsided, the patient was stable enough for us to slowly wake her up again after consulting with our neurosurgery colleagues,” said Markus Gruber, head physician of the intensive care unit at the Murnau hospital.
“Tereza is now in a stable condition, which allows her to be safely transported to the Czech Republic. She will undergo a series of further examinations and a subsequent rehabilitation phase under the supervision of specialists at the local hospital.”
Nova’s partner and national ski coach Ondrej Berndt added: “It was very fortunate that everyone reacted so quickly and Terka was immediately brought to the clinic in Murnau after the fall.
“We still have a long way to go, but I am convinced that we will make it. Together with Terka’s parents, we would like to thank everyone for the support we are receiving, and at the same time ask for respect for the privacy and peace that Terka will need during her recovery”. – AFP
