KUALA LUMPUR – The Ministry of Health (MOH) denies allegation that the Omicron Covid-19 variant has been detected in Malaysia.

In a statement, the MOH said that the viral message stating that the new variant that was first found in South Africa has been detected in Perak is untrue and is merely a false allegation.

“MOH denies the viral message, alleging that the new Omicron Covid-19 variant with 32 spike protein mutations was detected in Perak.

“At the moment, no Omicron Covid-19 variant case has been detected in Malaysia,” the ministry said, labelling the rumour as fake news.

The new variant is the latest Covid-19 strain, B.1.1.529 and it was reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) for the first time on 24 November 2021 in South Africa. It was also discovered in several other countries outside Africa including Belgium, Hong Kong, Britain, German, Italy and Israel.

Meanwhile, the MOH also advised the public to stop spreading unverified information and refer to the ministry’s official social media to get validated information. -MalaysiaGazette
