The Government should consider a coherent, rights-based framework for the whole higher education sector, rather than preserving unequal freedoms depending on whether a student studies at a public or private institution.

WHEN DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke warned on Dec 9, 2025 that the party would reassess its position in the unity government if “meaningful reforms” were not delivered within six months, it sounded like a long-overdue attempt to reassert the party’s reformist spine.

Still, the risks are clear. If subsidy reforms trigger discontent, if growth falters under global pressures, or if governance reforms stall, Budget 2026 could quickly become a political liability.

Such questions reveal a bigger problem: Malaysia’s planning ecosystem may lack coordination among environment, utility, zoning, and development agencies. Even if gas pipelines are vital, human safety and land resilience must come first. There must be transparent disclosure to homebuyers: “Your house is just 20 meters from a gas main—built decades ago.” Informed communities make healthier choices.

Malaysia’s role as Chair of ASEAN provides a critical and strategic platform for leading the region and shaping new approaches to resolving the conflict in the South China Sea.
