KUALA LUMPUR – Corruption among civil servants is nothing new and it has nested in some of them.

The Executive Chairman of Skuad Pengurusan Jenazah Malaysia (SPJM), Rafieudin Zainal Rashid said that some ‘insiders’ requested money from him to manage corpses.

According to him, that culture never cease for the past 17 years since he started managing dead bodies.

“Some insiders requested for money, in return, they will assign the corpse management to my organisation.

“I was shocked at first and I advised them not to continue their practice as it is not only wrong religiously, but, actions can also be taken against them for instigating corruption,” he said during an interview with SKOP MG entitled Rasuah Hingga Ke Liang Lahad.

Due to his sternness, nobody dared to do such things to him again.

“Although they never asked from me again, my friends from other organisations suffered the same fate. They requested for pocket money or ‘candies’.

“Sometimes, it’s hard to get evidence because they asked for cash. Some were afraid, thus, they obliged.

“The money requested was more than the cost of managing corpse, for example, the fixed rate for corpse management is RM600.

“The materials required to shower the corpse is not high. Soap, cotton and others are around RM200. When they asked for ‘candies’, it’s another RM200 of pocket money,” he said.

When asked who those insiders are, Rafieudin replied that they are the civil servants.

“Some of them are staff from the forensics department, some are the police.

“They use their power, for example, to claim a dead body, you would need the signature of the police or the forensics. They will use their power to choose who would pay them,” he said, explaining that it could be seen from the way how some lower grade civil servants can own luxury cars or spend luxuriously.

“How do they work? Imagine, if they get RM200 for each dead body, if you have 10 corpses on that day, they would getF RM2,000.

“They would get anyone to manage the dead bodies who can entertain their demand,” he said.

Rafieudin confessed that he had reported the offence of a Sergeant to the Bukit Aman Integrity Unit.

“I don’t want to concede in these things and I have done my duty.

“I also do not want to be the cancer and let corruption nests in anyone,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rafieudin also confessed that the accreditation of Covid-19 corpses management given by the religious council to SPJM since 17 August has been revoked on 24 August.

“I don’t know where SPJM went wrong and our accreditation was withdrawn when we have been managing that for a year.

“Why did the religious council wanted to be the hero at the end of this when SPJM has been handling the cases for a very long time,” he questioned. -MalaysiaGazette
