KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) was formed to avoid the country from falling into a political turmoil that the people would not like, said its Chairman, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He, who is also the President of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) was unwilling to see the PN Government falls into the hands of Pakatan Harapan (PH) took the approach of nominating Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as his successor.

“I was not willing to see the PN Government fall that way, thus, I made an extraordinary approach. UMNO toppled me and I nominated Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the Prime Minister.

“What for? It was to save the country from falling into a political turmoil that may not be liked by the majority of the people.

“We were not ready to allow the country to fall into the hands of Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng. I’m sorry,” he said during a live broadcast last night.

Therefore, he was willing to hand over the position of the Prime Minister to UMNO, to ensure the well-being of the people in the country.

“I left them and formed Perikatan Nasional to ensure the well-being of the people. I was willing to nominate Ismail Sabri, and after getting the support from everyone, including the 13 Members of Parliament from UMNO, he was then chosen as the Prime Minister.

“Thus, I fell and UMNO rose,” he said.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin said that he could request the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to dissolve the Parliament after losing his majority as 15 UMNO MPs withdrew their support for him last August.

However, he said that would be an irresponsible action as the Covid-19 pandemic was critical.

“Therefore, I chose to relinquish my position, although, according to the constitution, a Prime Minister who loses the majority may advise the Agong to dissolve the Parliament,” he said.

Muhyiddin also said that the situation in Melaka was unexpected and exceptional. The political crisis happened after four State Assemblymen withdrew their support for their leader thus, causing the state government to fall.

He added, to ensure that the government formed by PN would remain strong, all candidates from the coalition must sign an agreement after they win the election.

According to him, the measure would prevent corruption from happening in the state administration in the future.

“We are preparing the agreement and I will request all candidates for the Melaka State Election to sign them within these two days.

“This is to show our commitment in fighting corruption. This is to tell everyone in Melaka that the government formed after 20 November is a PN Melaka government,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette
