KUALA LUMPUR – The witness of the undersea tunnel corruption trial involving the former Chief Minister of Penang, Lim Guan Eng told the court that the accused requested for 10 percent of the profit from the project generated by his company.

The Senior Executive Director of Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd, Datuk Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli said that Guan Eng committed the offence in a car while they were on their way back to a hotel in Kuala Lumpur after their dinner in March 2011.

“I was rather shocked when the words of wanting 10 percent of profit came from the mouth of YB Lim Guan Eng himself, who has been against corruption all these while,” said the 23rd witness before Sessions Court Judge, Azura Alwi today.

Consortium Zenith Construction was the main contractor for the RM6.3 billion undersea tunnel project which obtained the contract via direct negotiation.

Guan Eng, who is also the former Finance Minister is facing charges on abusing his position to get RM3.3 million in gratification by helping Zarul’s company to be appointed to carry out the development and construction main roads and tunnel projects in Penang amounting RM6,341,383,702.

On the second count, Guan Eng was charged for instigating 10 percent from profit received by Zarul as a gratification for helping the company to be appointed for the project.

The Member of Parliament of Bagan was also charged on two counts of charges for causing two lots of the Penang State Government’s land evaluated at RM208.8 million to be disposed to the developer of the undersea tunnel project between 17 February 2015 and 22 March 2017.

Guan Eng however pleaded not guilty to all charges and claimed trial. -MalaysiaGazette
