KUALA LUMPUR – The Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) did not reject the possibility that some of the 61 Rohingya escapees from the Sungai Bakap Immigration Detention Depot in Penang have run to Selayang.
Its Director-General, Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud said, the remaining Rohingya ethnic detainees who are at large know several areas in the country as they have experience working in those areas.
“We are still hunting for the remaining 61 individuals (foreigners) who ran away from Sungai Bakap. Based on the information we received, some of them ran to Selayang.
“The police informed us yesterday that those at large know the areas in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and they worked in Kuala Lumpur before,” he said in a news conference today.
On 20 April, a riot broke out at the Sungai Bakap Temporary Immigration Depot and 528 Rohingya detainees escaped the detention centre after the riot.
From that amount, 357 have been tracked down and rearrested, including six who died while crossing the PLUS Highway at KM168 south-bound near Jawi.
Meanwhile, Khairul Dzaimee did not reject the possibility that the escapees are being assisted by their own compatriots as they have been hiding for over a week after escaping the immigration depot.
“Most probably not by the locals, but by their own community. The Immigration and PDRM are still hunting for them. I wish to extend my gratitude to PDRM for helping us to track down those who ran away,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette
