KUALA LUMPUR – Six Rohingya detainees who ran away from the Relau Detention Centre at Bandar Baru Kedah early this morning has died in a road accident.

The Penang Police Chief, Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said, they were involved in the accident while crossing Kilometre 165 of the North-South Expressway at 6.50 am this morning.

The deceased were two men, two women and two children (one girl and one boy).

In his news conference, he said, the accident stopped the other 229 detainees from crossing the expressway and they treaded along the route instead.

“The public who spotted them have contacted the police and arrests have been made,” he said.

Earlier, Mohd Shuhaily said that 528 out of 663 Rohingya detainees managed to escape this morning.

The police are tracking down 205 Rohingya detainees and the hunt requires huge source of manpower.

“Alhamdullilah, we received the help from a group of youths and the villagers who arrested 88 detainees,” he added.

According to him, the case will be investigated by the Kedah Police Contingent. -MalaysiaGazette
