BANDAR BAHARU – The police are still tracking down 88 Rohingya ethnic detainees who held riot before breaking out from the Sungai Bakap Immigration Detention Depot at Relau.

The Kedah Police Chief, Commissioner Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad said that the 88 detainees comprised of two masterminds who created the riot two days ago.

He said, as of 12.00 pm today, the police had rearrested eight detainees.

According to Wan Hassan, the manhunt was conducted around the Bandar Baharu and Kulim districts in Kedah, Seberang Perai Selatan in Penang and Kerian in Perak.

“Based on the breakdown, 440 Rohingya ethnic detainees who escaped have been rearrested. They comprised of 223 men, 88 women, 68 boys and 61 girls.

“The 88 detainees who are still at large involve 71 men, nine women, one boy and seven girls,” he told the journalists at the Bukit Tok Non search operation centre today.

Commenting on the investigation, Wan Hassan said that they have identified four masterminds of the incident after they recorded statements from the detainees.

They are identified as Nur Karim Shir, 34, Mohamed Ali, 30, Muhammad Salim Nur Amin, 21, and Mohd Yunus, 44.

“Nur Karim and Mohamed Ali have been rearrested, meanwhile, two are still at large and believe that they are still around the area.

“The operation to track down the masterminds and detainees who are still at large will be carried on,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette

  1. Since the significant majority of refugees are living freely outside of immigration detection centers, then no refugee should be he’d against his/her will in any immigration detection center. Otherwise, why not ship out all refugees to the Bashan Char island or to any country who is obliged to accept refugees as if Malaysia is the only country which is obliged to accept refugees. Be realistic okay.
