KUALA LUMPUR – The government will be managing and bearing the costs of the mandatory quarantine of the pilgrims who returned to Malaysia after performing their umrah.

The pilgrims involved are persons under surveilance (PUS) who are tested Covid-19 negative during the screening conducted by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Minister at Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions), Datuk Dr Abd Latiff Ahmad said that they will be placed at hotels or Public Training Centre, depending on the room availability on the arrival date.

“For this option, the government will bear the management cost of the quarantine, including the food and beverages and transport from the airport.

“The quarantine period will be determined by the MOH,” he said in a statement today.

The implementation was made after understanding that the pilgrims were concerned about the additional costs and perhaps, some of them would not feel comfortable during the quarantine.

“The umrah pilgrims have option to either deal directly with the private quarantine stations by referring to the hotels listed by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), or the quarantine stations managed by the government,” he said.

Earlier, all umrah pilgrims had to undergo self-quarantine at home after returning from Saudi Arabia. However, according to the Minister of Health, Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, the non-compliance to the SOP by the pilgrims during home quarantine has caused the viral infection among their family members.

This happened after they received family members or friends at their home and exposed them to the Covid-19 infection.
