Speaking to reporters before departing the White House for his Asia tour, Trump said discussions with Xi next week would focus on trade and tariffs between the two countries, as well as issues concerning Taiwan.

“We have a lot to talk about with President Xi, and he has a lot to talk about with us. I think it will be a good meeting,” he said.

Trump noted that Washington currently imposes a 157 per cent tariff on China, describing it as “unsustainable” for Beijing. He added that the US would seek certain concessions during the talks.

The US president will meet Xi on Oct 30 on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in South Korea.

Trump is scheduled to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday and attend the US-ASEAN Leaders’ Working Dinner.

He will then travel to Tokyo to meet newly appointed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi before heading to the South Korean port city of Busan, where he will meet President Lee Jae Myung.

Trump is also expected to deliver remarks at the APEC CEO luncheon and attend the US-APEC Leaders’ Working Dinner.
