KUALA LUMPUR – Dormitory unfit for human, dirty environment, food waste and rubbish full with flies, nauseating stench and overly crowded atmosphere. These are the words for a workers dormitory at a construction site in Jalan Stonor.

The Dang Wangi District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said, the employer of the construction site has failed 100 percent in the aspect of cleanliness and did not fulfil the minimum standard of the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 [Act 446].

They did not prioritise on the aspect of cleanliness at all, as if, the employers willingly allowed their employees to live in an uncomfortable environment.

In addition, no mattress or pillow was provided to any of the workers.

“Generally, we are not satisfied at all with the residence, showers and the rooms provided are not fit to be resided by humans.

“We are worried if such environment can cause the spread of Covid-19,” he said.

Earlier, Mohamad Zainal and a team of police from the Dang Wangi Police Headquarters raided the construction through a Full MCO SOP Compliance Operation today.

Several enforcers from the Department of Labour were also present to monitor the compliance of Act 446.

The construction site only has six toilets for the use of about 200 Bangladeshi construction workers.

The matter was made worse with the site manager, who is a Chinese national was initially dissatisfied with the presence of the authorities today.

Nevertheless, Mohamad Zainal said that they were there to monitor the MCO compliance to curb the spread of Covid-19.

He said, the enforcers need to inform the management before conducting a raid.

Meanwhile, the Federal Territory Senior Assistant Director of Labour,

Mohd Faisal Fariz Baharudin said, the department will issue an order to clean and upgrade the employees’ residence of the construction site to their employer.

He said, the employer will be given a period of two weeks to upgrade the environment. If they fail to do so, the construction workers will be ordered to leave the area.

“We will issue the notice order and monitor them,” he said.

Besides that, the Dang Wangi IPD also checked on another construction site near Jalan Bukit Bintang.

Based on the observation at the second site, the Department of Labour and the police were pleased with the compliance of Act 446 and SOP to curb the spread of Covid-19. –MalaysiaGazette
