KUALA LUMPUR – The Member of Parliament (MP) of Bera, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is officially the ninth Prime Minister of Malaysia after he took his oath before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara this evening.
The Vice-President of UMNO was clad in black baju Melayu and waved to the media practitioners as he left the Main Gate of Istana Negara at 3.23 pm.
Earlier, Ismail Sabri and his wife, Datin Sri Muhaini Zainal Abidin arrived at Istana Negara via Gate 2 at Bukit Damansara for Covid-19 screening before he was allowed to enter the Singgahsana Kecil for the appointment ceremony.
Yesterday, Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has given his consent to appoint Ismail Sabri as the ninth Prime Minister of Malaysia.
His appointment was made in line with Article 40 (2)(a) and Article 43 (2)(a) of the Federal Constitution and after the Malay Rulers Conference at Istana Negara yesterday.
The Comptroller of the Royal Household, Datuk Indera Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said in a statement yesterday that His Majesty hoped that the appointment of new Prime Minister would end the political crisis immediately.
All Members of Dewan Rakyat are urged to put aside political agenda and be united in handling the pandemic for the benefit of the people and the country.
His Majesty repeated his opinion that the people should not be burdened by the never-ending political crisis when the country is battling healthcare and economic issues due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Malay Rulers Conference which took place yesterday at Istana Negara had discussed about the appointment of Prime Minister, new Cabinet formation besides completing the final process before His Majesty determined the political leader who truly deserved to get the majority support of the Members of Parliament (MPs) to lead the new government.
Last Thursday, 114 MPs who allegedly supported Ismail Sabri as the Prime Minister replacing Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin were granted an audience with Al-Sultan Abdullah.
Ismail Sabri had allegedly raked the majority support of 114 MPs compared to Opposition Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who got 105 votes.
