PUTRAJAYA – Sam Ke Ting’s fight for justice at the Court of Appeal is not a racial issue.

Her lawyer, Muhammad Faizal Mokhtar said, Ke Ting expressed her disappointment when certain quarters started blaming the judiciary system right after she was convicted and sentenced at the Johor Bahru High Court on 13 April.

“For Sam Ke Ting, she believes in the sovereignty of the law and she obeyed any court decision on her.

“When she lost, some people said that the judiciary system was rotten. What Ke Ting understood was that it involved the value of humans’ lives. It clashes with the freedom of an accused,” he said at the lobby of the Palace of Justice today.

Faizal added, as long as Ke Ting was not proven guilty, she cannot be jailed, especially when she has the rights to appeal at the Court of Appeal.

“For the prosecutors, they also fought about the humanity. We understand that it is very difficult to understand how eight teenagers could die.

“These two are universal issues. Anyone wins, if she is found guilty, or acquitted and dismissed, the winners are Malaysians.

“It is not an individual’s plight. This is not the Sam Ke Ting’s personal fight,” he explained.

Ke Ting, in her testimony stated multiple times that she was truly sorry and sympathise with the loss of the family members involved.

“She fights for freedom and I also believe that my freedom is precious and must be paid with a hefty price.

“In this case, Sam Ke Ting paid it with imprisonment and that is the price she understood and have to pay,” he added. -MalaysiaGazette
