KUALA LUMPUR – Close to 800,000 signatures have been collected through the #FreeSamKeTing online petition launched by Wan Junaida against the Court of Appeal to release Sam Ke Ting from her reckless driving conviction.

The petition was launched two days ago after a clerk was found guilty of reckless driving thus causing the death of eight teenage joyriders on 18 February 2017.

According to the petition, the people were horrified by the new sentence and verdict on Ke Ting as facts supported that she was a responsible driver and also the real victim in the accident five years ago.

“It was the failed parenthood of the parents of the future mat rempit that allowed their children to roam in the street with modified bicycles, or “basikal lajak” at 3am.

“We do not accept this judgment, and seek to have her sentence overturned, so not to rob the bright future of a young, innocent Malaysian citizen.

“As magistrate Siti Hajar Ali noted in her judgement back in 2019, Sam was not under the influence of alcohol, was not using her phone and had her seatbelt on while driving, proving that she was driving responsibly and carefully, but it was a dark, hilly and winding road where the driver could not foresee that there would be a bicycle gang on the road at 3am in the morning,” the petition on change.org wrote.

On 13 April the Johor Bahru High Court sentenced Ke Ting to six months in prison and RM6,000 in fine after finding her guilty of reckless driving thus causing the death of eight teenagers who were joyriding at 3.00 am five years ago.

The sentence thus set aside the Magistrate Court’s decision on 10 October last year, which maintained its decision to acquit and discharge the accused.

The accused also had her driver’s license revoked for three years, effective after she served her sentence. -MalaysiaGazette
