JAKARTA – Indonesia has called on the international community to build a broad coalition in support of Palestine, stressing that the Palestinian cause is not solely a concern of Muslims.
Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir urged the international community to abandon outdated approaches, saying it should no longer allow Israel’s violations to continue or respond to them in a fragmented manner.
“Division is a gap that Israel has always exploited,” he said while representing Foreign Minister Sugiono at the Ministerial Meeting on Jerusalem in Amman, Jordan, on Wednesday (local time), according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
To strengthen global support for Palestine, Indonesia proposed five concrete measures, including developing a common strategy based on unity, taking steps to uphold international law and the rulings of the International Court of Justice, and expanding international recognition of Palestine.
The other measures include strengthening efforts to protect the Al Aqsa Mosque, supporting Gaza’s reconstruction, promoting Palestinian national unity, and backing the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
He said the political landscape in West Asia had changed significantly due to the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, Israel’s military operations in Gaza, Syria and Lebanon, and the escalation of the conflict between the United States (US) and Iran.
He said these developments, underscored the need for a more united international response to the Palestinian issue.
Arrmanatha also reaffirmed Indonesia’s support for the Hashemite Custodianship over the holy sites in Jerusalem, including Al Haram Al Sharif, and for an independent State of Palestine in accordance with international law.
The Ministerial Meeting on Jerusalem was convened to strengthen the international community’s response to Israel’s actions in the Palestinian territories, including violations of the status quo in Jerusalem and the Al Aqsa Mosque compound.
It was attended by foreign ministers, deputy foreign ministers and senior officials from Malaysia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Egypt, Türkiye, Tunisia, Somalia, Pakistan, Morocco, Palestine and Qatar, as well as the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.
The meeting adopted a joint statement expressing support for strengthening Palestinian institutions in Jerusalem, rejecting unilateral moves to relocate diplomatic missions to Jerusalem as violations of international law, and calling for a coordinated media campaign to raise awareness of Israel’s actions and their impact on regional and international peace and security.
