KUALA LUMPUR – The Mufti of Perlis questioned how the staff of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) could make a preliminary decision that their boss is a political victim.

The support came prior to any investigation and the way the Chief Commissioner of MACC, Tan Sri Azam Baki denied allegations on his shares ownership of public listed companies earlier also did not make sense.

The Mufti of Perlis, Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin was skeptical about the decision taken by the staff of MACC, stating that the anti-graft agency was supposed to be the most sensitive quarter in this issue.

“They should have sternly said that ‘to protect the dignity of MACC, we demand for a fair and transparent investigation’. They should have made a stern statement stating that it must be investigated thoroughly,” Mohd Asri said.

According to him, it was truly unfortunate for an organisation entrusted by the country to eradicate corruption made an awkward and unprofessional statement on corruption that was also their main responsibility.

He added, the national corruption level would be very ill if we fail to handle this issue.

Therefore, he suggested that the whole leadership of MACC should be revised and reshuffled for the fairness and transparency its administration.

Mohd Asri added, the statement made by the Chief Commissioner of MACC that his account was used by his brother to purchase stocks was very peculiar.

Therefore, it has become the responsibility of everyone with wits in the country to rise and oppose corruption as it is a huge demand in religion.

“Corruption involves the sins of a person with Allah and human. Drinking alcohol, for example is haram and wrong. However, it is between that individual and God. That person can repent and ask for forgiveness from Allah.

“However, corruption is a sin that destroys the country. It brings unjust and oppress other people. We need to rise and oppose it together. Repenting from corruption is to seek forgiveness from Allah and the public,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette
