KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin expressed his disappointment by the Members of Parliament (MPs) from the government who left the Dewan Rakyat during the bloc vote for the amendment of Subsection 4(5) of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA).

According to the Home Minister, those MPs were in the Dewan Rakyat when the bill was being debated.

“Some of them (MPs) were already in the House and I can name them. They left the Dewan Rakyat during the bloc vote. That was unfair.

“The excuse they used was they don’t like to see my face,” he said when met by the journalists after the 215th Police Day celebration today.

Hamzah said, he would use all providence of the law to ensure that SOSMA would be implemented.

“What can I do? I’m thinking of using whatever law we have and God willing, I will ensure that SOSMA will continue to be enforced after July,” he said.

According to him, those who rejected the SOSMA motion did not think about national interest involving security despite they said that they love the country.

“We abolished ISA (Internal Security Act 1960) and then, there were several incidences involving organised crime, thus, we thought that the instrument (SOSMA) is important.

“In the end, we compromised with the 28 days detention period only for criminals involving big cases such as terrorism, organised crime and others under SOSMA after the act was approved. It was extended in 2017 and it will expire this July,” he said.

Hamzah said, after July, the authorities need to use the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) to arrest the members of crime syndicates.

Meanwhile, Hamzah said that he planned to retable the motion after the government failed to amend SOSMA in the Dewan Rakyat to extend the effective period for the Act last Wednesday (23 March).

“I am looking at how we can table it again,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette
