KUALA LUMPUR – The Ministry of Education (MOE) should have provided a stronger mechanism to replace Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3) before abolishing it.
The Lecturer from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Centre of Community Education & Wellbeing, Dr Anuar Ahmad said that the PT3 abolition is seen as a rash action without seeking the best solution on par with PT3.
“Currently, we agreed to have School-Based Assessment (PBS) where there are Classroom-Based Assessment (PBD), Physical, Sports and Co-curricular-Based Assessment (PAJSK) and Psychometric Assessment (PPsi).
“The question lies in if the PBD is strong enough to replace PT3?
“Obviously, there are complaints and grumbles among the parents and teachers that the PBD is not steady enough.
“PBD cannot be fully trusted yet as there are issues surrounding its implementation such as filling up too many forms, variable marking system among others which make PBD less practical compared to PT3,” he said in the SKOP MG last night, Mansuh PT3, Ke Mana Hala Tuju Pendidikan Negara (Abolish PT3, What is the Direction of National Education?
Anuar said, without the mechanism the national education system would be compromised. Besides that, the MOE also needs to tackle the confidence issue of the teachers in assessing the students.
“It depends on the professionalism and ethics of the teachers. Truly, the schools are not universities with committees and a group of experts.
“I think, that should be set up in schools as a process of assessment.
“The class teachers give grade their students but the marks must also be jointly assessed with the other teachers teaching in the same class.
“With that, there will be check and balance among the teachers on the grading system,” he said.
Those mechanisms were not mentioned during the PT3 abolishment and no mechanism was stated as its replacement.
“It would be best for the schools to execute assessment like the universities in replacing PT3.
“We get rid of PT3 but replace it with a better mechanism that can convince the parents. The school level assessment must be more accurate and trustworthy,” he said.
On 2 June, Senior Minister of Education, Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin announced that the PT3 will be fully abolished beginning this year.
With the abolition, the MOE will strengthen and enhance the PBS system.
