KABUL – Loud explosions rocked Kabul on Friday, AFP journalists and residents in the Afghan capital said, hours after the Taliban government said it launched a border offensive against Pakistan.

The blasts were heard across the city from around 1:50 am (2120 GMT Thursday) and were accompanied by the sound of jets, the AFP team reported.

One resident said there were up to eight blasts that hit the city.

“The first two explosions were farther away from us. The last ones were near us and shook the house and fighter jets can be heard after every explosion,” said a resident who requested anonymity for security reasons.

The blasts were followed by successive rounds of gunfire heard by AFP journalists in central Kabul until around 2:30 am.

Hours earlier, the Afghan military attacked Pakistani troops along the border, in retaliation for deadly air strikes days earlier. – AFP
