KUALA LUMPUR – Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) announced the resignation of Tan Cheng Hoe as the Head Coach of the national football team.

The Secretary-General of FAM, Mohd Saifuddin Abu Bakar said that the decision was made following the recent failure of Harimau Malaya in qualifying for the semi-finals of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 in Singapore.

“Cheng Hoe had a discussion with the management team of FAM and stated his intention.

“After an open discussion from all angles, the management of FAM decided to respect his decision and agreed to release Cheng Hoe on a mutual agreement basis,” he said in a statement today.

FAM also thanked Cheng Hoe who has served FAM for a cumulative of 14 years, since he was an assistant coach of the Under-20 national squad in 2005 until 2013. He then returned to FAM in 2017 as the national assistant coach to Nelo Vingada, before being promoted to head coach at the end of the year.

He managed to help Malaysia rake the SEA Games 2009 Gold Medal and became the Champion of AFF Sukuzi 2010 Cup when he was the assistant to Datuk K. Rajagobal. Steering the Harimau Malaya as the Head Coach, the team emerged as runners-up in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018. -MalaysiaGazette
