Hulu Langat residents traumatised by the sound of rain

HULU LANGAT – The residents of the Hulu Langat district who were badly affected by the huge flood last week were not only worried but traumatised if the natural disaster would repeat itself.

Most of the residents interviewed by MalaysiaGazette shared their trauma, some found it hard to sleep whenever there is a downpour.

At the same time, they also shared their lethargy of cleaning their house off thick layers of mud.

A resident, Hafiz Abdul Kadir, 43, did not expect that his newly rented house would be submerged in the flood.

According to Hafiz, his family which consisted of his wife and four children was living in Jalan Genting Klang before they moved to Kampung Jawa last month.

“I am traumatised. The water level was showing a rising trend and I need to be alert. Besides that, the warning was issued.

“The residents need to be more careful as there could be a possibility of the second wave of flood. We hope that it would not happen again and the authorities would look into what needs to be done such as the irrigation system or affected rivers. We urge for observation as it (flood) has caused lives,” he said when met by MalaysiaGazette today.

Hafiz said, based on the experience of the villagers who have been living in the area for a long time, the recent flood was the worst in 40 years.

Meanwhile, housewife, Rosni Mohamad, 36, said that she would start to worry about the safety of her two children whenever it rains.

“We need to be prepared every time it rains heavily. It would be okay if it is just one day, however, when it enters the second or third, I would have trauma, especially at night.

“We were lucky as our neighbour next door woke us up. I was sleeping with my children during the incident. Otherwise, I wouldn’t know our fate,” she said.

Nevertheless, Rosni is grateful that they are saved from the disaster although all the furniture inside her house were damaged in the flood.

“What can we do? It is our fate. We are grateful that we’ve survived. We’ll buy the things slowly when we have the money,” said the woman who has lived in the village for seven years.

Meanwhile, a resident from Batu 15 1/4, Dusun Tua, Mohd Riffin Arsat, 59, did not expect that his house would be damaged so fast.

Mohd Riffin who is still traumatised by the event lives in fear now after seeing the structure of the house he has been living in for over 31 years collapsed.

 

“I am traumatised. I am afraid that the same thing would happen again. There would be news of flood again. The residents here fear that.

“If it’s possible, let there be early warning so that the residents can receive the real information.

“Although my heart breaks seeing the condition of my house, what can I do? I must accept my fate,” said the man who temporary seek shelter at his relative’s house in Ampang.

Among the areas that are badly affected by the flood in this district include Batu 25, Sungai Lui; Batu 16; Batu 17; Batu 18; Kampung Sungai Serai and Taman Sri Nanding. – MalaysiaGazette
